Single Adults Pursue Their Passion at the ASAM Convention
By Alexis A Goring – Editorial Assistant – NAD Family Ministries
On July 5-7, 2007, close to 650 single adults from the United States, Canada, Bermuda and locations across the globe convened in the Buena Vista Hotel at Disney World for the
Pursue Your Passion Adventist Single Adult Ministries Convention.
The days’ events fostered fellowship, networking and informative workshops as attendees were encouraged to rededicate themselves and their treasure to the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Single men and women took inspiration from outstanding plenary speakers such as the Chaplain of the United States Senate, Barry Black. The singing group, Valor, provided special music and inspired their audience to transpose the mission-focused tunes into practical everyday living. The single adults departed encouraged to return to their respective residences with a desire to live lives that are passionate for Christ and to become involved in ministry at home and abroad.
“Will this become an annual event?” asked Rhonda Nelson, a podiatrist from Baltimore, Maryland who enjoyed her stay. Many other participants echoed similar sentiments as they basked in the afterglow of the wonderful synergy that was experienced in Orlando.
This was the first event of its kind to be sponsored by the North American Division (NAD). Planning this conference was a collaborative effort between several Adventist entities. The Department of Family Ministries of the North American Division (where Single Adult Ministries has its home) co-sponsored this event with the Southern Union and personnel support was provided through the Florida and Southeastern Conferences, whose generous contributions helped to make this ministry event happen.
Currently, the Single Adult Ministries Committee is thinking of the next steps for ministry.
“I want to see Adventist Single Adult Ministries in every local church within the NAD,” said Andrea D. Hicks who serves as the new NAD Adventist Single Adult Ministries Coordinator. “With God’s help and the talents resident in this untapped people group, we can help to strengthen the kingdom of God on earth, and prepare people for the coming of the Lord.”
Willie Oliver, Director of Family Ministries for the North American Division, applauds Hicks for her great skill by which she superbly led the organizing team during her first three months of her tenure.
