The Queen Charlotte Islands are a hundred and thirty islands at the edge of North America. Rainforests draped with moss. Humpbacks rising from the ocean. An ancient culture with modern villages and old ones where the remains of beautiful totems and houses stand above wild beaches.

One story goes that long ago, after the ice receded and the floodwaters lowered, Raven walked along a beach in Haida Gwaii, looking for occupation. He found some creatures in a shell and convinced them to come out. These were the first Haida, the first people, and they have lived here ever since.

When I was attending Andrews University during two summers I worked along the coast of BC with the Medical/dental clinic and one of the places we set up the portable office was in Queen Charlotte City on the Queen Charlotte Islands. What a beautiful place! What a beautiful island! It certainly is a place to visit and visiting Massett one of the First Nations Village is also an experience to treasure. It would be well worth anyone's time to visit these unique islands off the cost of Northern BC!

This is the Queen Charlotte Islands, or Haida Gwaii: A hundred and thirty islands at the edge of North America. Rainforests draped with moss. Humpbacks rising from the ocean. An ancient culture with modern villages and old ones where the remains of beautiful totems and houses stand above wild beaches.

Join the Maple Leaf for a multi-day adventure tour of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage site aboard a classic schooner.

Accompanied by wonderful naturalists, many of them actively researching the area, we have enjoyed spectacular trips here each year on the classic schooner Maple Leaf since we began operating trips in Gwaii Haanas in the 1980s.

On your trip to Haida Gwaii, you'll enter the world of the Haida, arguably the most powerful pre-contact culture on the west coast of North America.

Yes, these islands are very nice. The summer we were there with the dental clinic the Viet Nam War was still on and there were hundreds of draft dougher hippies there. They had set up their own little town and that is where they hid out. So, it is a very nice, and warm place to be.
DARLENE

Fourty years? Seems to me I was on the Island about 30-35 years ago. Anyway.....still a long time ago. Makes me feel old! :- )

I probably never will go back. It was a real priviledge to go there when I was working during that summer. It just seems too hard to get there. You would have to fly in or go in by boat. I suspect the easiest way would be to fly from Vancouver or go by goat from Prince Rupert. Sure wouldn't mind going though and I suspect there are not many places to stay.
