NAD Leadership Convention in Orlando, Florida, May 10-11, 2008

Andrea Hicks reported:

There were a total of 37 people in attendance, from Florida, Southeastern, Northeastern, Allegheny East, Gulf States, South Central, Georgia-Cumberland, Rocky Mountain, Upper Columbia, Arkansas-Louisiana, Southern New England, Kansas-Nebraska, Washington and Potomac Conferences.

Our event started on Sabbath, May 10, 2008 around 2:58 pm. Most of the attendees arrived early, between 1:30 pm-2:30 pm. Dr. Jeffery Brown, opened up with a wonderful devotional on “Focusing on Christ”. Then Dr. Brown’s workshop on “Having a Passion for ASAM” was thorough and inspirationally inspiring. He talked about a lot of valuable things but what stands out, is that we have to keep ASAM in the forefront by letting everyone know it’s importance and what the ministry stands for.

Elder Robert Henley, spoke on Marketing & Advertising Events". We learned a lot about branding our individual ministries and advertising in the 21st century. He also, gave a testimony on his new insight on the value of having an ASAM in the local church (he learned this at the NAD ASAM 2007 Convention). His mother became a widower approximately 3 years ago and has since, left the church, because no one has reached out to her. He mentioned ASAM has the tools to assist many single adults in her situation.

Sunday, May 11, 2008, Dennis Franck’s workshop was on “Beginning A Single Adult Ministry”. He assisted us in exploring the most of the basic, “need to know” items of building and growing a healthy Single Adult Ministry today. Areas covered include: how to begin a ministry from scratch, needs and interests of single and single-again adults, designing a ministry by age and need, various models of ministry, hosting the group on or off the church grounds, characteristics of the ministry, obtaining senior pastor support, promotion ideas, and leadership principles. His seminar was insightful and gave the do’s and don’t for starting an ASAM.

Kris Swiatocho, spoke on “How to Develop an Effective SAM on a Shoestring Budget ". She spoke about Fundraising, Wise Spending, Sponsorships, Setting up a Budget, Church and Community Support and Future Budgeting. Her seminar was interactive and fun!

Overall the attendees enjoyed the event and thought it was insightful and helpful. They mentioned that they now understand ASAM is ministry and have the tools to start/revive their local ASAM.
